(Note: Blue tail skink emerge from hibernation and mate in the Spring) Blue tail skink Suns on a rock Doesn’t even blink When he sees the hawk. Red tail hawk Talons hard as steel Heads for the rock To catch a lizard meal. Claws grip tail Succulent and soft, But Hawk will fail When the tail pops off! Skink runs fast As the blue tail stays In Hawk’s grasp No triumph for today. Hawk screams loud Dinner has escaped Skink feels proud He’s alive and safe. “Come get your tail,” Hawk slyly says to Skink. Skink just smiles And gives a little wink. “It’s yours now, bird, A keepsake from our fun. Autotomy’s my word I’ll grow another one.” The gif is from https://rainbowsnakes.tumblr.com/post/98991968294/frolicingintheforest-five-lined-skinks-blue.
