My Mother's Art

If talent can be inherited, then I got mine from my mother, Joyce Saxon Dennihy. My mom expressed herself through music, writing, and art. Five children and a career in nursing didn't leave her much time to pursue these talents, but she left evidence that they were indeed a part of her make-up as a person. So was her appreciation for anything inspirational.

When I was a kid, my favorite Christmas present was an art box that my father made and that my mom filled with paints and brushes. She always encouraged my art and would go gaga over any little sketch or painting that I produced. When I hit my teens, my interests changed and I pretty much got out of art altogether. It wasn't until my 40's that I took it up again.

We lost mom to cancer when I was 16 and she was 44 years old. I'm thankful for the time we had her. She was the first person who modeled for me an appreciation of beauty, a quest for purpose, and the importance of simple kindness.

So, here's to you, Mom! Thanks for all the times you cheered me on. Even now, I can still feel you in my corner.

Beautiful! I remember YOUR art as a child (mostly horse heads) but I didn't know about your Mom's talent. I'm glad her talents and beauty live on in you. Mostly though, I am so glad that you and Diane escaped her fate.

I have told you before how loved she was by our family....especially my Dad. Just 2 days ago, Mom and I were talking and she told me that my Dad waited on line and registered her for a class, when she was ill, that she never made it too. He knew she wouldn't, but he did it anyway.

I have a regret to confess. I selfishly wish I had not gone to see her the last time. When I think of her (often) I picture her as she was then, and have to push my brain to picture her, in her blue jeans, with that huge smile feeding a multitude of animals.OUR family dog was a descendant of yours. (Short haired collie, named Breezewood VELVET angel.)
I also regret that our friendship took a 40 year hiatus. I am so glad you are back in my life. You are a wonderful legacy to an incredible woman.
Love from your Pal, Bonnie.

Bonnie, you touch my heart... I never knew your dad did that for mom. What a beautiful and noble gesture. He was a kind man and his legacy also lives on...in you.

Thank you, my dear, old friend. I too am so glad we reconnected!

Wow, Laurie. I had no idea. What a lovely tribute. (I love what Bonnie wrote as well. All really something.)

Thanks, Bern :) yeah, Bonnie is a great childhood friend. Our dads went to high school together, joined the navy together, and raised families together. Her parents were Aunt Pat and Uncle Johnny to me.
